Episode 5.5: An equipment side note

This post is a special request: I've been asked to talk about the equipment I've been using. Hopefully this can be of use to people!

From left--> right:

1. Olympus LS-14 Linear PCM digital voice recorder, with a 16G memory card (purchased from Amazon). This little baby is nice & portable, and the lavalier mic (below) plugs right in for a great sound situation. Of course, I try to use recording environments with limited to no ambient noise, but sometimes a car alarm just goes off. Or birds chirp like there's no tomorrow. I've had some troubles going back and forth from a PC-Mac, but after I load everything into my computer & external hard drive, I have to reformat the memory card to make sure all phantom files are erased.

2. Sony headphones (Target/Amazon): Used by each participant in the perception tasks, so as to control for equipment as well as limit distracting background noise.

3. Audio-Technica Lavalier Microphone (Amazon): plugs into field recorder, and has an on/off switch. Never quite sure about battery strength, but I make sure to turn it off whenever not in use.

4. Wordless storybook, Chalk (Amazon). Also used by my colleague & friend Franny Brogan in El Salvador. Lots of options for final, plural /s/ to be used, especially in female NPs. Hurray!

5. Dell laptop, running MatLab: Thanks to Henry Tehrani of the UCLA linguistics department for lending me this box! A little heavy, but so thankful to not have had to purchase a computer exclusively for fieldwork use.

Not only do I prefer to not take my own laptop out into the field, this one came with Matlab already installed! Thanks, Henry!

All of these items fit into a backpack, so as not to draw too much attention.

Not pictured: Dropbox & external hard drive, for backing up all files. These recordings & results files are like gold. Gotta protect 'em!

Thanks for reading!
